After accidently rolling away from its mother before he hatched and landing underneath an expecting mother duck, an egg hatched and was almost immediately given a name: Ugly Duckling. Declared a misfit, the Ugly Duckling ran away, hoping to find a home. He was desperate and waddled over to the first house he saw. The animals already living in the house welcomed him but with the condition he lay eggs. While the Ugly Duckling tried his hardest to lay an egg, he couldn’t and was run out of the house. After being rejected multiple times, he found himself at a spacious lake where a flock of swans swam. As he approached the lake, the swans flew away. Believing he could find a home by flying, the Ugly Duckling decided to learn. With no one to teach him, he had to teach himself. After many failed attempts, the Ugly Duckling almost gave up when the flock of swans from earlier landed next to him. They wanted to help teach him how to fly. After so many rejections, the Ugly Duckling was suspicious of their help but welcomed it. And, in turn, they welcomed him into their flock. After months of learning, the Ugly Duckling finally took off and fly into the air with all his swan friends cheering him on. Landing clumsily into the lake, his friends swam over to congratulate him. But he noticed his reflection in the water and realized it looked like all the swans around him. Shocked, he finally understood why he always felt different. He never was a duck, let alone an ugly one. He was a swan and had finally found his home. With a new confidence and sense of belonging, the Ugly Duckling gave himself a new name: Trumpeter Swan. A reminder to proudly be himself.
